Imagine colossal ships looming over you. These giants find their temporary home at Ben Schoeman Dock. This dock is a key part of the Port of Cape Town. Let’s explore the story of this bustling hub.

The Port of Cape Town is one of South Africa’s busiest ports. It stands as the second-largest container facility in the nation. Only the Port of Durban handles more containers. Cape Town’s port sits strategically in Table Bay. This location is roughly 120 nautical miles from Cape Agulhas. Its position on the South Atlantic route gives it economic importance. This route is one of the world’s busiest trade lanes.

The port handles a large volume of fresh fruit. Petroleum products and chemicals also pass through here. Fertiliser, iron, and steel are other major commodities. Barley, maize, and wheat contribute to the port’s activity. Transnet National Ports Authority manages the port’s facilities. This is a South African government corporation. The port’s official founding dates back to April 1652. Container terminals were established much later in 1975.

Ben Schoeman Dock is the larger outer dock. It is the heart of the container terminal. The water depth inside Ben Schoeman Dock varies. Depths range from 9 metres to 13.9 metres.

In 2012, a significant project concluded. The Cape Town Container Terminal expanded to accommodate larger vessels. This R5.4 billion project doubled the terminal’s capacity. It aimed to transform the port into a regional shipping hub.

The Port of Cape Town boasts a total of 34 berths. These include lay-by berths and ship repair facilities.

The Cape Town Container Terminal has six deep-sea berths. These berths offer a ground slot capacity of 5,250 slots. There are also 1,500 reefer points.

Commodities pass through the Multipurpose Terminal in Duncan Dock. Fruit, fish, maize, and wheat are among them. Paper, steel, cement, and scrap metal are also handled. Timber, vehicles, and general cargo complete the diverse list.

The Victoria and Alfred Basins offer facilities for ship and boat repairs. Smaller vessels and cruise ships also find berthing here. An oil terminal handles bulk petroleum products.

In 2017, the Ben Schoeman Dock received an upgrade.

Ben Schoeman Dock stands as a testament to Cape Town’s maritime importance. It connects South Africa to the world. It ensures a flow of goods and commerce. From its historical roots to modern expansions, the dock continues to evolve. It adapts to the ever-changing needs of global trade.
