Have you ever heard of a housing estate perched on a hill? Sun Tin Wai Estate is exactly that. It sits south of Chun Shek Estate in Tai Wai, Hong Kong, overlooking the Lion Rock Tunnel Road. Sun Tin Wai Estate isn’t a new development. It was built between 1981 and 1982. The estate comprises eight residential blocks, housing thousands of residents. Sun Tin Wai Estate is a public housing estate, providing affordable homes for many people. Nearby, you’ll find Fung Shing Court. This is a Home Ownership Scheme court, offering a different type of housing option. It was built a few years later, in 1985, and has three residential buildings. In 2016, nearly 9,000 people called Sun Tin Wai Estate home. Fung Shing Court housed almost 6,000 residents. Together, they form a vibrant community nestled in the hills of Tai Wai. During the 2019 District Council elections, Sun Tin Wai Estate and Fung Shing Court fell within two different constituencies: Sun Tin Wai and Chun Fung. Even during the challenging times of the COVID-19 pandemic, Sun Tin Wai Estate faced its share of difficulties. In February 2022, Foo Wai House, one of the estate’s buildings, went into lockdown. This was a stark reminder of the global health crisis that affected communities worldwide.
