How does it stay up there? The TRIPLE L II Sculpture in front of us seems to defy gravity with its delicate balance. The TRIPLE L II Sculpture is a kinetic sculpture. This means it moves, but not in the way you might think. It’s powered by the wind. This sculpture is made up of three L-shaped pieces of steel. The largest L sits upon a tall stele. The other two smaller Ls are balanced on its tip. It looks precarious, but it’s actually a marvel of engineering. The joint that connects the pieces is designed to allow for movement in the breeze. Even a gentle wind can send the smaller Ls spinning and swaying. The artist, George Rickey, didn’t want the sculpture itself to have any inherent meaning.
