High above the bustling city, at Coronation Viewpoint, time seems to stand still. Coronation Viewpoint earned its regal name in honor of King George VI’s coronation in 1937. The panoramic vista before you stretches across the landscape. It whispers tales of a nation’s connection to its monarchy. The viewpoint isn’t just about admiring the view. It’s a tangible link to a pivotal moment in history. The coronation of George VI was a significant event. It followed the unexpected abdication of his brother, Edward VIII. Originally scheduled for Edward VIII, the coronation took place on the same planned date, May 12, 1937, at Westminster Abbey in London. Years later, another royal event echoed at Coronation Viewpoint. In 1954, a direction finder was installed to commemorate Queen Elizabeth II’s coronation in 1953. This addition further cemented the site’s royal connection. It transformed it into a dual tribute to two monarchs. A plaque at the viewpoint details these historical events. It lists the names of those involved in establishing this commemorative space. The plaque reads, “CORONATION VIEWPOINT. This Site Was Named To Commemorate The Coronation Of His Majesty King George VI. This Indicator Was Erected By The Council Of The Municipality Of Lane Cove In Conjunction With Local Public Organisations To Commemorate The Coronation Of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Officially Unveiled On 12th December, 1954 By His Worship The Mayor Ald. G. O. Venteman.” As you take in the view from Coronation Viewpoint, remember the historical weight it carries. It’s more than just a scenic overlook. It’s a living testament to the enduring ties between a nation and its crown.
