Deep within the heart of Wiener Neudorf, Austria, stands the Prenningerkapelle. A whisper of the past, a testament to a man’s devotion. This late-historicist chapel, constructed of exposed brick, replaced a former plague chapel. The Prenningerkapelle, built in 1884, holds a unique story. Karl Prenninger, a railway expert, and his wife, Hermine, donated this chapel. Karl, born in Vienna in 1829, dedicated his life to the railways. He began his career in 1850, rising through the ranks to become director of railway maintenance and supervision. He even had a hand in constructing the Semmering Railway and the railway from Mödling to Hinterbrühl. His success allowed him to give back to the community. He and Hermine gifted the Prenningerkapelle, a beautiful structure now protected as a heritage site. Look closely at the inscription. It reads, “ERBAUT v KARL u HERMINE PRENNINGER 1884,” a permanent reminder of their generosity. This chapel, more than just bricks and mortar, represents a piece of Wiener Neudorf’s history, inextricably linked to the life and work of Karl Prenninger. The Prenningerkapelle stands as a quiet monument to his achievements and his love for his community.
