Beneath the surface of this serene water lies a story. It’s a story of transformation and recreation at Xiangmi Lake. This man-made lake in Shenzhen’s Futian District invites us to explore its depths, both literal and historical.
Xiangmi Lake, originally named Xiangmaochang Reservoir, came into being in 1966. It was a time of growth and change in Shenzhen. The reservoir was small initially. It expanded in 1978 to meet the needs of the growing community.
Imagine Xiangmi Lake in its early days. Locals flocked here for fun, food, and relaxation. The lake became a popular destination for tourists seeking respite from city life. It provided a space for boating, swimming, and fishing.
Today, Xiangmi Lake covers 1.94 square kilometers. It holds 1,783,500 cubic meters of water. The lake serves multiple purposes. It helps control floods and manage silt. It also provides water for the surrounding landscape.
But the story of Xiangmi Lake doesn’t end with its natural features. In 1985, the Xiangmi Lake Casino opened. It was the largest amusement park in Southeast Asia at the time. The park featured the world’s first water double-loop roller coaster. Sadly, the amusement park closed in 2011.
In recent years, the area around Xiangmi Lake has undergone significant redevelopment. The local government has grand plans for the future. The Xiangmi Lake Reservoir will play a crucial role in establishing the “Xiangmi Lake New Financial Centre.” The goal is to transform the area into Shenzhen’s financial street.
The northern section will feature the Shenzhen International Exchange Centre. The central area will become the new financial center. The southern section will host a health-themed sports and leisure park.
The iconic roller coaster was dismantled. This was a necessary step in the redevelopment process. As you look out over Xiangmi Lake today, you are witnessing a place in transition.

But there is even more to see here than just the lake. Close to Xiangmi Lake lies Xiangmi Park. It features flowerbeds with tulips, grape hyacinths and daffodils. It is like a local version of the Keukenhof tulip garden in the Netherlands.
