Everett H Barney a local ice skate manufacturer played a pivotal role. He donated a significant portion of the park’s western section. His estate included Pecousic Villa a house he initially intended for his son. Sadly his son passed away. Barney instead built a mausoleum a poignant reminder of his loss. He and his wife lived in the house until their deaths. His contribution transformed the park adding ponds fountains a waterfall bridges and a network of paths.
The park wasn’t always as it is now. In its early days there were conflicting ideas on how best to develop the land. Some wanted to keep as much of nature intact. Others preferred a more manicured landscape. Barney’s meticulous landscaping including his famous lily ponds became a source of both admiration and debate.
