The Shenzhen Bay Bridge opened on July 1, 2007. This marked the 10th anniversary of Hong Kong’s establishment as a special administrative region of China. The Shenzhen Bay Bridge is also known as the Hong Kong–Shenzhen Western Corridor.
This impressive structure is 5.5 kilometers long. That is about 3.4 miles. It has a dual three-lane highway. This allows a smooth flow of traffic. The Shenzhen Bay Bridge spans Deep Bay. It connects Ngau Hom Shek in Hong Kong to Dongjiaotou in Shenzhen.

The Shenzhen Bay Bridge also features an innovative co-location arrangement. Both passenger and cargo clearance are streamlined at the Shenzhen Bay Port. This saves time and enhances efficiency. The Hong Kong Port Area Ordinance allows Hong Kong to exercise jurisdiction in the area.
However, the Shenzhen Bay Bridge has faced challenges. In a recent incident, a steel cable snapped on the Hong Kong side. This led to the emergency closure of two lanes. An investigation is underway to determine the cause of the failure. The cable is being replaced.
Jimmy Chan is Hong Kong’s Director of Highways. He called the incident unusual. He assured the public that there are no structural safety issues. The snapped cable was one of six external prestressed tendons. These tendons support the affected area.
Veteran structural engineer Ngai Hok-yan expressed concern. He said that this incident raises questions about the maintenance of the Shenzhen Bay Bridge. He emphasized the importance of proper upkeep to prevent such issues.
Despite these challenges, the Shenzhen Bay Bridge remains a crucial transportation link. In the first 11 months of last year, there were 4.02 million vehicular trips through the Shenzhen Bay port.
