The faint scent of fresh paint lingered in the air. It was a peculiar contrast to the imposing structure before us – the Rimutaka Prison Church. This place, my friends, has borne witness to more than just Sunday sermons. Rimutaka Prison Church has a history as rich and complex as the lives it has touched. Built in 1967, it was originally part of Wi Tako Prison, later renamed Rimutaka Prison in 1990. But even before its brick-and-mortar existence, this land hosted a reformatory known as Wi Tako. Imagine, back in 1919, a time when inmates, many of them military defaulters, toiled to transform this swampy terrain into fertile farmland. Now, step inside the Rimutaka Prison Church. Picture hardened men, their lives etched with mistakes, finding solace in hymns and prayers. It’s a poignant reminder that even within the confines of prison walls, hope finds a way. This very church, once resonated with the soulful melodies of the Wi Tako Inmates Revue in 1969. A performance that captivated 500 people and filled their hearts with a mix of hope, talent and a touch of bittersweet reality. But Rimutaka Prison Church witnessed more than just religious services. It became a symbol of progress when, in 1985, it welcomed Celia Lashlie as the first female prison officer in a men’s prison in New Zealand. Today, the Rimutaka Prison Church stands as a testament to redemption. A powerful reminder that everyone, regardless of their past, deserves a chance at spiritual guidance and inner peace.
