But after the tragic loss of President Kennedy the school was renamed in his honor. The school first housed grades seven through ten. By 1966 it evolved into a typical high school serving grades nine through twelve.
The school underwent a significant renovation completed in 1999. This ensured that John F. Kennedy High School remained a state-of-the-art facility for its students.

Academically John F. Kennedy High School offers a wide range of opportunities. About 13% of students take part in the International Baccalaureate diploma program. There are also five academy programs. These attract students from across the Downcounty Consortium. These include the Leadership Training Institute broadcast journalism business management health professions and Navy Junior ROTC.
The school has a rich athletic history. The John F. Kennedy High School football stadium is named in memory of Brady Straub. He coached the 1984 football team to the state championship. The gymnasium hallway honors Jeremy Herring. He was an all-star basketball player.
