Once named Pampoenkraal, Durbanville holds stories as rich as the wines produced in its surrounding farms. This town in the Western Cape whispers tales of travelers and a vital freshwater spring.

Durbanville began in the early 19th century. It was a simple watering station. Weary travelers journeying between Cape Town and the interior stopped here to refresh. The original name Pampoenkraal meant pumpkin corral in Afrikaans.

In 1825 local farmers sought permission to erect their own church. Lord Charles Somerset granted their wish. The Dutch Reformed Church was inaugurated in 1826. A village began to grow around the church. It sat near the outspan where travelers rested overnight.

Locals petitioned Governor Sir Benjamin d’Urban in 1836 to rename Pampoenkraal. They wanted to honor him. Permission was granted. The village became D’Urban. To avoid confusion with Durban, the name changed to Durbanville in 1886. Durban was a major port city.

Durbanville gained its own courthouse, jail, and magistrate in the 1870s. It became a Magisterial District of Bellville. The old courthouse still stands altered within the Rust-en-Vrede complex. This complex was originally built in 1850.

A village management board formed in 1897. Durbanville became a municipality in 1901. John King was elected as the first mayor.

The village expanded rapidly in the early 20th century. The King Brothers Wagon Works became South Africa’s largest wagon works. It employed over 200 men. This accounted for almost the entire village’s workforce.

Today Durbanville is a vibrant suburb within the City of Cape Town. It blends rural charm with modern living. Afrikaans and English are the primary languages.

Durbanville offers a range of attractions. The Durbanville Rose Garden is world-renowned. It is a trial rose garden. Durbanville Nature Reserve boasts diverse plant and animal species.

The Durbanville Wine Route dates back to the 17th century. Farmers cultivated Cape Madeira grapes. Award-winning wines are still produced here.

From its humble beginnings as Pampoenkraal, Durbanville has evolved. It is a town with a unique history. Its blend of agriculture, colonial heritage, and natural beauty continues to enchant all who visit.
