The Ryde Park Memorial Cenotaph replaced an older cenotaph. It incorporates elements of the original. This symbolizes the enduring nature of memory. The original Ryde Cenotaph was conceived in 1966. RSL Sub Branch members and local Aldermen saw a need. They wanted a memorial to honor Australian soldiers. These soldiers had served in various wars. This original cenotaph was dedicated on April 16, 1967.
The new Ryde Park Memorial Cenotaph was rededicated on February 20, 2008. Reverend Greg Burke from St Anne’s Anglican Church and Father Paul Monkerud from St Charles Borromeo Parish Ryde led the rededication. Councillor Ivan Petch, Mayor of Ryde, officially opened it. The project was a community effort. North Ryde, Ryde, Gladesville, and Eastwood RSL Sub Branches partnered on it. Funding came from the City of Ryde and Bevillesta Pty Ltd. The artists Milne and Stonehouse brought the vision to life.
The cenotaph’s design is striking. A circular paved area is half-encircled by two low walls. One wall bears an inscription. The other displays emblems. At the center stands a modern stainless steel sculpture. Its cut-out lettering proclaims “LEST WE FORGET”. Recessed ground lighting illuminates the paved area. The sculpture’s inscription, “LEST WE FORGET,” serves as a constant reminder. A wall inscription further honors the men and women who served. A panel details the history of the Ryde Park Memorial Cenotaph. It speaks of the original cenotaph and its relocation.
The original cenotaph’s granite pieces are incorporated into the new design. This creates a tangible link to the past. The central obelisk points towards eleven o’clock. Its shadow stretches across the granite paving. This evokes the long shadow of service and sacrifice. A light source within the obelisk symbolizes the eternal flame. The Ryde Park Memorial Cenotaph is more than a memorial. It is a living space. It’s a place where the community can gather. They can remember those who served.
