High on the slopes of the Port Hills, Cashmere unfolds before you. It’s a suburb steeped in history and natural beauty. Cashmere’s story begins with the Māori, who named this area Te Iringa-o-Kahukura. Legend says a demigod placed a wooden figure of Kahukura near Dyers Pass and recited a karakia, imbuing the area with spiritual significance. Later, Sir John Cracroft Wilson, arriving from India in 1854, established a farm here. He named it Cashmere, after his birthplace of Kashmir, spelled with a “C” in the British style of the time. Some of his original farm buildings still remain, including “The Old Stone House,” originally built for his Indian workers and now a function center. Cashmere’s development accelerated in the late 19th century. Homes sprang up, and a church was built in 1908 on land donated by Wilson. The arrival of the Christchurch tramway system in the early 20th century further solidified Cashmere’s reputation as a desirable suburb, a reputation it retains to this day. Cashmere’s elevated position offers breathtaking views of Christchurch. But this beauty comes with a price. The suburb is vulnerable to natural hazards like rockfalls and landslides, most dramatically demonstrated during the devastating Canterbury earthquakes of 2010 and 2011. The earthquakes caused widespread damage, highlighting the powerful forces of nature at play in this picturesque location. Today, Cashmere blends its rich history with modern life. From the heights of Sugarloaf, with its transmission tower, to the banks of the Heathcote River, Cashmere continues to evolve. It’s a place where the echoes of the past resonate, a place where the stories of Māori demigods and British farmers intertwine, a place where the beauty of the Port Hills meets the vibrant pulse of a city. This is Cashmere, a suburb shaped by nature, history, and the enduring spirit of its people.
