Rockdale Council proposed Monterey as a new suburb. Some residents felt the name was too American. However most people favoured the name. Monterey officially became a suburb in 1972. It sits on Botany Bay’s western shore. Lady Robinsons Beach and Cook Park line its eastern border. Scarborough Park with its pond borders it to the west.
Monterey is primarily residential. A small cluster of shops can be found on Chuter Avenue near Scarborough Street. This area is a hub of local activity. This location also holds a place in music history. The 1987 music video for Mental As Anything’s “He’s just no good for you” was filmed on Scarborough Street. This adds a touch of nostalgia to this neighbourhood.
Scarborough Park’s history is fascinating too. It once was Pat Moore’s Swamp or Patmore Swamp. It received its current name from Hon Thomas Holt. Holt named it after the English coastal town of Scarborough North Yorkshire.
Today Monterey thrives. In 2021 it housed 4619 residents. A rich diversity of backgrounds and cultures makes Monterey a vibrant place. Many residents have Australian heritage. Greek Egyptian and Chinese heritages are also common. English remains the primary language. Greek Arabic Spanish and Macedonian are other commonly spoken languages. Eastern Orthodox Catholic no religion and Islam are prominent religious affiliations.
Monterey’s landmarks are both natural and man-made. Scarborough Park Tanner Reserve and Cook Park offer green spaces. Lady Robinsons Beach provides a beautiful coastal setting. The rock wall along Botany Bay is a striking natural feature. Monterey’s history is woven into its landscape.
