Dreaming of a place where everyone can enjoy the water? That vision became reality with the Eunice Kennedy Shriver and Sargent Shriver Aquatic Center. This center isn’t just a pool it is a testament to inclusion. It embodies the spirit of Eunice Kennedy Shriver who championed the rights of people with intellectual disabilities.

Eunice Kennedy Shriver was born in 1921. She grew up in a prominent family that included President John F. Kennedy. Eunice witnessed firsthand the struggles faced by her sister Rosemary who had an intellectual disability. This inspired her to dedicate her life to advocating for those often marginalized.

In the late 1950s and early 1960s people with intellectual disabilities were often ignored and neglected. They were routinely placed in institutions. Eunice believed in fair treatment for all. She recognized the unique gifts and talents of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

In 1962 Eunice Kennedy Shriver started a summer day camp for young people with intellectual disabilities. It was held in her backyard. This camp later evolved into the Special Olympics. The first International Special Olympics Games were held in Chicago in 1968.

Eunice Kennedy Shriver also directed the Joseph P. Kennedy Jr. Foundation. The foundation sought to prevent intellectual disability. It also worked to improve the lives of those with intellectual disabilities. Eunice’s work led to the creation of President Kennedy’s Panel on Mental Retardation in 1961.

The Eunice Kennedy Shriver and Sargent Shriver Aquatic Center continues her legacy. It offers recreational water activities for all ages and abilities. The center boasts an eight-lane L-shaped main pool. There is also a warm water leisure pool. Two hydrotherapy pools offer therapeutic benefits. A ten-meter diving platform challenges athletes. An interior water slide adds excitement. There is also an exercise room.

The Eunice Kennedy Shriver and Sargent Shriver Aquatic Center provides a space for everyone to thrive. It is a place where individuals with intellectual disabilities can experience the joy of sports.
