This is the Denkmal Henri Guisan. It is not just a statue. It is a symbol of Switzerland’s determination to remain independent during World War II. Henri Guisan was the General of the Swiss Armed Forces. He served from 1939 to 1945. This was a crucial period.

Henri Guisan was born in 1874. He grew up in a French-speaking part of Switzerland. Before his military career, he studied agriculture in France and Germany. In 1897, he became a gentleman farmer.

Guisan entered the Swiss military in 1894. He quickly rose through the ranks. By 1932, he had become a corps commander. This was the highest Swiss rank achievable during peacetime.

In 1939, as Europe edged closer to war, Switzerland needed a leader. The Swiss Federal Assembly elected Henri Guisan as general. He was tasked with safeguarding the country’s independence. He also had to maintain the integrity of Swiss territory.

Guisan faced a daunting challenge. Switzerland was surrounded by powerful, aggressive neighbors. Nazi Germany posed a significant threat. Guisan knew that Switzerland had to be ready to defend itself.

He mobilized the Swiss military. At one point, up to 850000 soldiers were ready. He also developed the National Redoubt concept. The army would retreat into the Alps if attacked. From there, they would continue resistance.

On July 25, 1940, Guisan delivered a historic address. He spoke to the Swiss Officer Corps on the Rütli. This location was charged with symbolism. It was the site of the legendary Rütli Oath. Guisan made it clear. Switzerland would resist any Nazi invasion. They would never surrender.

Guisan became a symbol of resistance. His leadership inspired the Swiss public. He maintained contact with civilians and soldiers. He rejected formalities.

Germany had planned to invade Switzerland. The plan was codenamed Operation Tannenbaum. However, Germany never risked the invasion. The Battle of Britain and Operation Barbarossa became priorities.

Henri Guisan left his command in 1945. He considered his mission fulfilled. He had successfully avoided war.

Guisan died in 1960. He was buried in Pully. 300000 people participated in his funeral procession. It was the biggest attendance at a funeral in Swiss history.
