Masjid Otsuka was established in 1999 by the Japan Islamic Trust. The center serves as the headquarters for eight masjids in Japan. Before Masjid Otsuka existed, the community gathered in Ikebukuro. When the lease could not be renewed, donations helped purchase the current building.
But Masjid Otsuka is more than just a mosque. It is a center for various activities. Daily prayers occur here. The Masjid arranges initiation ceremonies. They also host educational programs. These programs include Muslim marriage guidance and Quran lessons. Funeral arrangements are provided as well. Every Saturday evening, people of all faiths are welcome to dinner parties for conversations.
Beyond religious services, Masjid Otsuka extends a helping hand. They offer food to the homeless. The mosque also supports disaster-stricken and war-damaged areas. This support reaches both Japan and overseas.
The Masjid’s role in the Great East Japan Earthquake relief efforts highlights its community spirit. The day after the earthquake, Masjid Otsuka volunteers went to Sendai. Initially, they provided limited supplies. When children requested hamburgers, the mosque collaborated with local shops to fulfill the need. This act of kindness broke down barriers. It fostered understanding between the mosque and its neighbors.
Masjid Otsuka also operates educational facilities. The International Islamia School Otsuka includes a kindergarten and elementary school. A middle school was launched in April 2022.
The mosque actively supports refugees worldwide. They also organize food drives. Surplus food is delivered to children’s cafeterias. A monthly soup kitchen is held for those in need. Masjid Otsuka delivers food to the needy in the park.
