In ancient Japan, a loyal clan served Minamoto no Yoshiie. This is the story of Kuzugaya Goryo Shrine. Their prayers echoed through the halls of Hiyoshi Shrine. One fateful year, Yoshiie embarked on a conquest to subdue the rebellious Osamu clan. The Kuzugaya clan, devoted to Yoshiie, offered fervent prayers for his triumph. Their prayers were answered. Yoshiie returned victorious. The grateful clan, seeking a place to settle, found solace in a tranquil spot. It resembled their homeland. There, they established Kuzugaya Goryo Shrine. They enshrined the deities Hachiman, Empress Jingu, and Takenouchi no Sukune. They named the area Kuzugaya Village. This shrine holds a unique tradition. Every year on January 13th, the “Obisha Matsuri” unfolds. This ancient ritual involves shooting arrows at targets to predict the year’s fortunes. The tradition, once spanning from December to January 13th, is now observed only on the 13th. The shrine’s emblem, the Kuzugaya family crest, is three leaves on a single stem. It is displayed on various items within the shrine. Kuzugaya Goryo Shrine is nestled near the border of Nakano and Shinjuku. It stands quietly, a testament to ancient loyalty and enduring traditions. A visit here connects you to a time when prayers guided warriors and shaped destinies. It is a hidden gem in bustling Tokyo.
