“Was this ghat always called Janaki Ghat?” I often hear that question. Let me tell you the story of this serene place right here.

Janaki Ghat stands as a testament to faith and history. It is a place where the spiritual and the earthly intertwine. It is one of Varanasi’s most captivating riverfronts.

Once a simple open ground it was known for the Hayagriva Keshva shrine. The transformation began around 1860. Rai Girdhara Lal initiated the construction. For a brief time it was called Girdhar Lal Ghat.

Then in 1870 a queen from Bihar, Rani Kunvar of Sursand stepped in. She purchased the ghat and started its partial construction making it pucca. Rani Kunvar built a shrine dedicated to Janaki, Sita the wife of Lord Rama. Since then it became Janaki Ghat.

Janaki was a devoted woman. She poured her heart into this sacred space. The ghat became a tribute to her unwavering faith.

In 1917 Thakur Asarphi Singh, a member of the Sursand estate took initiative. He repaired and renovated the ghat. Stone steps were added connecting the ghat to the surrounding neighborhood.

High above the ghat the queen built two temples. These temples honored Vishnu and Shiva. They added to the ghat’s spiritual significance.

Even today religious activities take place here. They may be small. However they keep the flame of devotion burning.

The ghat is owned by a trust. The Municipal Corporation owns the ghat area itself. The trust maintains the properties. They do so according to their own vision.

There are ongoing efforts to protect Janaki Ghat. These include encouraging community involvement. Raising awareness of its heritage and responsible development. These steps ensure its preservation.

Janaki Ghat offers a tranquil escape. Take in the beauty and serenity. Watch the gentle flow of the Ganges. It is best to visit in the early morning. Sunrise paints the sky with vibrant colors. The cool air carries the scent of incense. Evenings are equally enchanting. The ghat is bathed in the soft glow of lamps.

You can also take a boat ride along the ghats. From the river you have a unique view of Janaki Ghat. The steps leading down to the water seem to whisper ancient secrets.

Janaki Ghat offers a unique window into Varanasi’s soul. It shows the city’s rich history. It also shows its enduring spiritual traditions. It is a place where you can experience peace. It is a place where you can connect with something larger than yourself. As you leave Janaki Ghat carry its serenity with you. Let it remind you of the enduring power of faith. Let it remind you of the beauty of devotion.
