Built between 1932 and 1935 Sommerrain is a fascinating Stuttgart neighborhood. Its name comes from an old local name. Picture this bustling community nestled in northeast Stuttgart. It borders Fellbach to the east. Espan lies to the south and Muckensturm to the north. Even Schmidener Vorstadt of Bad Cannstatt is a neighbor.
Sommerrain’s history is rich. In 1935 eight men formed the Loschgruppe Sommerrain. This is today’s volunteer fire department. Their annual Hocketse festival in early July draws up to 1000 guests. It’s the biggest local event.
The neighborhood saw significant changes. In the late 1970s construction began on the Auf der Gans residential area. This area contrasts with older Sommerrain. Smaller houses still dominate the original settlement. Larger newer buildings now mark the edges of Sommerrain. The population fluctuated. Around 3300 people lived there in 2000. This number dropped to almost 3100 by 2011.
Sommerrain has excellent transportation. An S-Bahn station serves lines S2 and S3. Bus lines 54 and 58 also stop there. Bus line 54 now only runs during peak hours. Line 58 provides service during off-peak times. It also connects to the U2 and U19 Stadtbahn lines at Obere Ziegelei.
Sommerrain boasts two churches. The evangelical Sommerrainkirche and the Catholic Heilig-Kreuz-Kirche. The Heilig-Kreuz-Kirche was rebuilt in the 1990s. It was consecrated on March 29 1998. Architect Wolfgang Liese-Grässer designed it. Bernhard Huber created the stained glass. Rudolf Kurz designed the altar.
Education is important in Sommerrain. The Albertus-Magnus-Gymnasium a Catholic school and the Sommerrainschule a public elementary school are both located there.
Sports are also a big part of Sommerrain life. SV Grün-Weiss Sommerrain is the largest sports club. Founded in 1989 it has about 600 members. Many are children and youths. They play soccer and offer recreational sports. A highlight was their 2009 victory over Türk SC Stuttgart. This win led to their promotion to the Bezirksliga Stuttgart. They later returned to the Kreisliga in 2012. The Kolping Kegelheim offers bowling on two lanes. Around 43 bowling clubs use its facilities.
Sommerrain is more than just a neighborhood. It is a vibrant community. A place with a unique history a strong sense of identity and a bright future.
