Is this where a silk manufacturer once sought respite from the city’s clamor? Right here at Johannesdals Gård, we step back into Stockholm’s fascinating past. Built around 1790, this charming estate wasn’t always known as Johannesdals Gård. It started as a summer retreat for Jakob Jakobsson Hoving, a prominent silk manufacturer. Imagine him, finding peace and tranquility by the shores of Mälaren. Over the years, Johannesdals Gård witnessed intriguing changes in ownership. In 1860, Axel Gabriel Carlson, a physician and politician, purchased the estate. He expanded its use, adding buildings for rent as summer havens, complete with ice cellars for storing perishable goods in those days. But by Christmas Eve 1864, ownership transferred to a young Dorothea Petersén. A Christmas gift from a doting father, perhaps. This estate whispers of a compassionate past. Dorothea, a dedicated philanthropist, established “Stiftelsen Nybygget” in 1874 in the southern wing. This foundation provided a home and education for underprivileged girls from educated families. Johannesdals Gård became a beacon of hope and opportunity, reflecting Dorothea’s commitment to social good. Johannesdals Gård stands as a testament to Stockholm’s ever-evolving history, a place where the echoes of silk manufacturers, philanthropists, and the laughter of children intertwine.
