In the heart of Caringbah, a quiet solemnity surrounds the Caringbah War Memorial. This isn’t your typical war memorial conceived in the aftermath of conflict. The Caringbah War Memorial has a unique, almost accidental, history. It began life as a gift, a symbol of gratitude, not remembrance. In 1935, a longtime Sutherland Shire resident, Mrs. Amy Mackay, gifted the town a magnificent drinking fountain. It was an elaborate structure, crafted from local sandstone, with separate drinking areas for people, horses, dogs, and even birds. Imagine children using a special step to reach the bubblers, the pink marble chips in the concrete troughs sparkling in the sun. A sundial and bronze light standard completed the ensemble. The inscription read, “Come Ye to the Waters,” an invitation to refreshment and community gathering. The fountain, dedicated by Shire President Edward Seymour Shaw, became a cherished part of Caringbah. Years passed, and the fountain underwent changes. In 1972, it was simplified and moved to its current location at the corner of Port Hacking Road and Kingsway. Decades later, the structure found a new purpose. In 2015, the fountain area was officially dedicated as the Caringbah War Memorial. It was a poignant transformation, a space of peace rededicated to honor those who served in war. A sandstone monument bearing the words “Lest We Forget” was added, a solemn counterpoint to the original inscription. The Caringbah War Memorial, therefore, represents a beautiful blend of history and remembrance. It stands as a testament to community spirit, a gift transformed into a place of reflection and honor. The first dawn service was held here in 1946, and each Anzac Day, the community gathers to pay their respects. The Caringbah War Memorial, born from an act of generosity, continues to serve the community, a place where the past and present intertwine.
