Now, Dover Heights boasts multi-million dollar homes with enviable views of both the Sydney Harbour Bridge and the vast expanse of the ocean. Imagine a time before these grand houses, when the land belonged to Daniel Cooper, a prominent merchant in the early 1800s. His firm, Cooper and Levey, stood on the very spot where the iconic Gowings Brothers retailers would later thrive. This land, once a simple farm, would eventually be subdivided in 1913, paving the way for the Dover Heights we know today. Dudley Page Reserve draws crowds eager to witness breathtaking sunsets over the harbor. Yet, these cliffs hold more than scenic beauty. During World War II, Rodney Reserve housed a Royal Australian Air Force radar station, a vital part of Sydney’s coastal defense. Later, the CSIRO, Australia’s scientific research organization, conducted groundbreaking radio astronomy experiments here. In 1945, a team led by John Gatenby Bolton detected solar emissions using simple Yagi antennas. They even pinpointed the first visible radio source: Taurus A, better known as the Crab Nebula, the remnants of a supernova witnessed by Chinese astronomers in 1054.
