A poignant granite gaze greets you. This is the Pomnik Gabriela Narutowicza Bust. It stands as a silent tribute. A testament to Poland’s first president.
The Pomnik Gabriela Narutowicza Bust wasn’t always here. Its journey began much earlier. Initially there were grander plans. A full-scale monument was envisioned. This was back in 1984. The Stronnictwo Demokratyczne of Ochota district spearheaded this effort. Sadly funds were scarce. The dream monument remained unrealized.
Then in 1992 a sandstone plaque marked the spot. It declared the future home of a Narutowicz monument. Still no monument appeared. Instead a different approach was chosen. A bust. A larger version of Edward Wittig’s sculpture. This sculpture already graced the Warsaw University of Technology’s aula.
Finally on December 9 2002 the Pomnik Gabriela Narutowicz Bust was unveiled. Actor Krzysztof Kolberger read a moving passage. It was a passage from the assassinated president’s oath of office. A nearby plaque provides further details about Gabriel Narutowicz’s life.
The bust’s location is also significant. It sits on Narutowicz Square. This square itself was designed in 1923. It aimed to improve the Ochota district. The square facilitated the growth of the district and easier access to the city center.
The Pomnik Gabriela Narutowicz Bust stands as a symbol of perseverance. Despite setbacks it was erected. The bust is a physical embodiment of a nation’s memory. A nation’s respect for its first president. Plans are underway. It is planned to move the bust. It will be placed in the center of the square. This is in line with a broader renovation project.
