Behold the Kusunoki Masashige Statue. This equestrian monument near the Imperial Palace isn’t just a statue. It’s a testament to loyalty and a fascinating piece of Japanese history.

This bronze giant depicts Kusunoki Masashige a 14th-century samurai famed for his unwavering loyalty to Emperor Go-Daigo. He’s remembered for his ultimate act of obedience. He knowingly led his army to their deaths. This was an act viewed as the epitome of samurai devotion.

The statue itself is impressive. It’s not only the oldest equestrian statue in Japan but also one of the finest. Sculptor Takamura Koun a leading figure in the modernization of Japanese wood carving created it. He was a professor at the Tokyo School of Fine Arts. Koun’s work demonstrates remarkable skill and detail.

Creating the statue was a monumental undertaking. The process wasn’t simple. The sheer size exceeding four meters presented challenges. Traditional casting methods were unsuitable. Assistant Professor Sessei Okazaki traveled to the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair. He studied the casting techniques of large statues there. He discovered a sectional casting method. He then returned to Japan and used a section-by-section approach. This innovative method was unprecedented in Japan. The horse alone was cast in seven sections.

The Kusunoki Masashige Statue wasn’t completed quickly. It took about three years to create the wooden model. An additional seven years were required to complete the final bronze statue. The chasing and patination added to the time required. The final product speaks volumes about the dedication and skill involved in its creation. The statue stands proudly near Nijubashi Bridge a testament to Japanese artistry and history. It’s a fitting tribute to Kusunoki Masashige’s legacy of unyielding loyalty. Let the imposing figure of Kusunoki Masashige on his steed inspire you today.
