The founder and his son Kisshomaru taught there. Classes were intense and rigorous. The dojo was also home to the Ueshiba family and live-in students.
World War II brought hardship. The dojo survived air raids. It became a refuge for those who had lost their homes. Kisshomaru bravely risked his life to protect it from the bombs. He ensured the Kobukan’s survival. After the war’s devastation Kisshomaru reopened the dojo. In 1948 the Aikikai Foundation was established. The Kobukan was renamed the Aikikai Hombu Dojo. This marked a new era for Aikido’s growth.
The dojo expanded significantly. In 1967 a new three-story building replaced the old wooden structure. Then in 1973 two more floors were added. Today the Aikikai Hombu Dojo is a five-story building. It features three separate training areas. These contain a total of 250 tatami mats. This provides ample space for the hundreds of students who train there daily. Classes are held seven days a week. They are open to all Aikikai members and visitors.
The current head of the Aikikai is Moriteru Ueshiba. He is the third Doshu the grandson of the founder. The Doshu continues to pass on the spirit of Aikido. He maintains the legacy of Morihei Ueshiba. He ensures that the Aikikai Hombu Dojo remains a focal point for Aikido practitioners worldwide.
Many high-ranking instructors teach at the Hombu Dojo. They represent a diverse range of teaching styles. This reflects the evolution of Aikido itself. The Aikikai style encompasses many interpretations of Ueshiba’s original teachings. Yet it remains the most traditional school of Aikido. It’s true to the techniques valued by the founder. The spiritual aspects might be less emphasized than some other schools.
