Established in 1932 Theodore Roosevelt High School stands proudly in Washington DC. It’s a testament to the city’s commitment to education. The school originally aimed to accommodate 1200 students. It offered a unique blend of college preparatory courses and business-oriented classes. This reflected the needs of the community at that time. Theodore Roosevelt High School was one of the first schools in the District of Columbia to integrate in 1953 a significant step forward for racial equality.

The building itself is a beautiful example of Colonial Revival architecture. Its design is impressive. It features a central pavilion and two side wings. These are connected by charming single-story arcades. The school has undergone significant renovations. A $121 million modernization project was completed just before the 2016-2017 academic year. This extensive work transformed the school. The renovation included enclosing the central courtyard to create an atrium. A new entry foyer was added. The iconic cupola and hyphens were carefully restored.

Hidden within the school’s walls is a remarkable piece of art history. A mural titled An American Panorama was created in 1934. It was part of the New Deal-era Public Works of Art Project. Students under the guidance of Nelson Rosenberg brought this masterpiece to life. The mural was rediscovered during the 2013 renovations. It is now undergoing restoration. This remarkable artwork will soon be on display once again a symbol of the school’s rich history.

Theodore Roosevelt High School boasts a remarkable legacy. It has produced many notable alumni. These include politicians like Charlene Drew Jarvis and Sharon Pratt. Other notable alumni are scientist Shirley Ann Jackson and radio host Diane Rehm. The school’s history is filled with stories of success and achievement. It continues to shape the lives of students in Washington DC. The school’s commitment to education and its dedication to the community make it a vital part of the city’s fabric. It remains a place of learning and growth. It is also a significant landmark in the Petworth neighborhood. Today Theodore Roosevelt High School continues its mission to educate and empower students.
