Thaiss Memorial Park

Amidst the vibrant tapestry of Fairfax City sits Thaiss Memorial Park. It’s a place of echoes, where the cheers of Little League games once filled the air. Thaiss Memorial Park is named after Frederick W. Thaiss, a prominent figure in the Fairfax Little League’s history. He served as the league’s president, leaving a lasting impact on the community and the park that now bears his name. Thaiss Memorial Park isn’t just a green space; it’s a testament to the community’s love for sports and recreation. Currently, Thaiss Memorial Park spans 12 acres, boasting five baseball diamonds, a playground, and a two-story building constructed in 1997. It’s a hub for the Fairfax Little League, but it’s also a place where city employees and visitors to the Gerry Connolly Cross-County Trail park their cars. The park, however, is about to undergo a significant transformation. Recognizing that the park’s current design no longer meets modern needs, the city has embarked on an ambitious renovation project. Thaiss Memorial Park will be reborn. The existing five baseball fields will be reduced to three, but these new fields will be larger, ADA-accessible, and equipped with dedicated seating. The current parking lot, partially located in a resource protection area, will be removed and replaced with a green oasis of 100 new trees and a bio-retention area. Not only that, but the parking capacity will also be increased by 50%, with a new drop-off/pickup zone added for convenience. The existing two-story building will be replaced with a modern, ADA-compliant one-story structure. This new building will house restrooms, a meeting space, and a concessions stand, complete with a pedestrian plaza. The park’s lighting will also get an upgrade to energy-efficient LEDs, minimizing light spillage into the surrounding area. Thaiss Memorial Park is more than just ballfields and parking. The renovation will introduce a 7,500-square-foot multigenerational playground, a half-court basketball area, and a 1/5-mile walking track. It’s envisioned as a vibrant, multigenerational destination for the community. This revitalization will cost approximately $8.16 million, a significant investment in the city’s future. Construction is slated to begin in the summer of 2024, requiring the park to close completely during the renovation period. This will allow for a swift and efficient completion. While the closure will temporarily displace users, the Fairfax Little League and other organizations are working with the city to identify alternate locations during construction. The community’s excitement for the new and improved Thaiss Memorial Park is palpable. It promises to be a place where memories are made, games are played, and community thrives.
