Built in 1867 the Yusufeyyah Masjid stands tall. It’s a testament to the enduring faith of the Muslim community in Wynberg. This mosque holds a special place in South African history. It’s the sixth oldest mosque in the country. Yusufeyyah Masjid wasn’t always the grand structure we see today. It began humbly. A wooden house served as the first prayer space. Emam Badroedien led the prayers there. As the community grew so did their need for a larger place of worship. Yusuf Ryklief generously donated land in 1866. The current building was completed the following year. It was later extended in 1887. The name Yusufeyyah Masjid beautifully combines the names Yusuf and Safia. This reflects the communal spirit of its founders. Emam Abdurakieb served as the first imam from 1867 to 1925. He guided the community for almost six decades. The Yusufeyyah Masjid wasn’t just a place of worship. It also served as a vital social hub. It was the first Muslim burial ground in Wynberg. It operated as a cemetery from 1848 until 1896. Remarkably in 2022 the Yusufeyyah Masjid was granted permission to reopen the cemetery. This was after 127 years. The mosque continues to play a crucial role in the community. It provides regular religious instruction. It hosts international Islamic scholars. It supports local initiatives. The Yusufeyyah Masjid continues to thrive. It serves as a beacon of faith and community. It’s a living testament to the strength of the Muslim community in Wynberg. The mosque’s ongoing contributions have had a powerful impact.
