What dominates the northwestern section of this city? It is Minčeta Tower. We are standing before a symbol of Dubrovnik’s strength. Minčeta Tower represents the city’s unconquerable spirit. The tower’s story is one of constant adaptation. It reflects Dubrovnik’s determination to remain free.

Minčeta Tower got its name from the Menčetić family. They owned the land where it stands. Initially, in 1319, it was a four-sided fort. Nicifor Ranjina designed it. But the biggest changes came later.

After Constantinople fell to the Ottoman Empire in 1453, Dubrovnik knew it had to act. The city needed to strengthen its defenses urgently. They called upon Michelozzo di Bartolomeo of Florence. He was a famous architect. Michelozzo transformed Minčeta into a round tower. This new design suited modern warfare better. Its walls were six meters thick. Protected gun ports lined the tower.

Work on Minčeta Tower moved quickly. This was especially true after Bosnia fell to the Turks in 1463. However, Michelozzo left Dubrovnik in 1464. He was offended that his plans for the Rector’s Palace were rejected.

Juraj Dalmatinac from Zadar continued the work. He built the bottom part of the fortress. He also added the recognizable crown at the top. Juraj of Dalmatia mostly worked on fortresses during his time here.

Minčeta Tower once held nine guns. One was a mighty bronze cannon. Ivan Rabljanin crafted it. He also made the bell for the city’s bell tower.

Minčeta Tower is the highest point in Dubrovnik’s defense system. It stands as a testament to the city’s love for liberty. From the top, you can witness a magnificent view of Dubrovnik. It is often said that a visit to Dubrovnik is incomplete without experiencing this view. The views of the city from Minčeta are unforgettable.

Fans of Game of Thrones might recognize Minčeta Tower. It served as the House of Undying in Qarth. This is where Daenerys Targaryen searched for her stolen dragons.

Today, you can also visit the museum. It is located in the excavated basement of Minčeta. You can see a 16th-century cannon foundry.

During the summer, a Libertas flag flies next to the tower. Libertas is Latin for freedom. It’s a reminder of the old Dubrovnik Republic’s values.

Minčeta Tower has truly earned its place. It stands as a symbol of Dubrovnik. It represents its history and its spirit. It is a place where you can admire outstanding views.
