In 1988, amidst undeveloped land near Dulles Airport, a vision began to materialize. This vision was Reston Town Center. Reston Town Center was designed to be a vibrant hub. It was meant to bring together businesses, residents, and visitors alike. Reston Town Center officially opened its doors in 1990. The initial phase focused on Market Street. Two eleven-story office buildings, One and Two Fountain Square, anchored the north side. Low-rise retail and office spaces framed the street. A Hyatt Regency hotel and smaller buildings lined the south side. Two public parks offered a tranquil escape at the east end. The development continued to evolve. Town Center Parkway was built, expanding westward and providing better access. Phase Two of Reston Town Center commenced in the late 1990s. This phase expanded the area west of Library Street. The impressive eighteen-story One Freedom Square and sixteen-story Two Freedom Square joined the skyline in 2000 and 2001. Residential options diversified. Low-rise condominiums and townhomes sprouted near Town Center Parkway. Three residential high-rises followed in 2006, west of Freedom Square. Three South of Market office buildings were completed in 2008. A nine-level parking garage, crowned by Democracy Tower, was finished in 2009 along Democracy Drive. The Avant, a fifteen-story apartment high-rise south of Reston Town Square Park, marked the completion of Phase Two in 2013. Reston Town Center continued to grow. In 2015, a surface parking lot north of Fountain Square was transformed into the Signature apartments. These twin residential towers opened in 2018. Soon after, construction began on 17Fifty, a seventeen-story glass office tower. It replaced low-rise retail from the initial phase and opened in 2020. Today, Reston Town Center stands as a testament to thoughtful urban planning. It boasts over fifty retail shops, thirty restaurants, a cinema, and a variety of residential options. With the arrival of the Metro Silver Line in 2022, Reston Town Center cemented its place as a thriving destination. It’s not just a town center, but the heart of a community.
