Journey back to 1763. Imagine the rhythmic clang of hammers and the scent of freshly cut wood. The villagers of Hung Leng are building their Hung Shing Temple, a beacon of hope and protection. Hung Leng, nestled in the heart of Fanling, North District, was originally known as Kuk Fung Leng. This Punti walled village, established by the Hau clan, holds centuries of stories within its weathered walls. The Hung Shing Temple stands as a testament to their resilience and faith. It became the heart of a powerful alliance, the Four Yeuk, uniting Hung Leng with Loi Tung, Lung Yeuk Tau, Lin Ma Hang, and Tan Chuk Hang. This alliance provided strength and mutual support in times of need. Fast forward to the early 20th century, the rumble of a train echoes through the valley. The Sha Tau Kok Railway has arrived in Hung Leng, connecting this once isolated village to the wider world. The Hung Leng station, opened in December 1911, bustled with activity, a symbol of progress and connection. Today, the echoes of the railway are gone. But the station building still stands, a Grade III historic building, whispering tales of a bygone era. The Hung Shing Temple, also a Grade III historic building, continues to watch over Hung Leng. This village, though now a part of modern Hong Kong, retains its unique identity, woven from the threads of history, tradition, and community. As you stand here, in the shadow of the temple, close your eyes and listen. The whispers of the past still resonate in Hung Leng.
