In 1927 missionary Daniel Berg arrived in São Paulo. He rented a house in the Vila Carrão neighborhood. He held the first service that very day. This humble beginning marked the start of the Igreja Evangelica Assembleia de Deus in São Paulo.

The Igreja Evangelica Assembleia de Deus wasn’t always located where it is today. Its journey began in a small rented house. Four months later three converts were baptized. The church quickly outgrew its initial space. It moved to larger premises on Avenida Celso Garcia. Further growth necessitated another move to Rua Cândido Vale. Subsequent moves took the congregation to Rua Vilela in the Tatuapé neighborhood. Later it moved to Rua Chavantes in the Brás district. Eventually the Igreja Evangelica Assembleia de Deus found a home in the Belenzinho neighborhood. Its current location is Rua Conselheiro Cotegipe 273.

Several pastors led the Igreja Evangelica Assembleia de Deus. Daniel Berg served from 1927 to 1930. He was followed by Samuel Nyström Samuel Hudlund Simon Lundgren Sílvio Brito Francisco Gonzaga da Silva and Bruno Skolimovski. Cícero Canuto de Lima served from 1946 to 1980. Since 1980 Pastor José Wellington Bezerra da Costa has led the church.

When Pastor José Wellington took over in 1980 the church had 500 congregations 70000 members and 1300 workers. The main branches were in São Miguel Paulista Lapa Osasco Tucuruvi Indianópolis Barueri Carapicuíba Cidade Ademar and Casa Verde. Today the Igreja Evangelica Assembleia de Deus in São Paulo and its surrounding areas boasts 500000 members 2000 churches and 15000 pastors. The growth is remarkable.
