Tucked away amidst the trees, the Church of the Good Shepherd – Protea stands as a quiet testament to a vibrant past. The Church of the Good Shepherd – Protea sits on land that was once part of the Protea Village, established back in 1834. This village was later renamed Bishopscourt by Bishop Gray when the Anglican Church acquired the property. The Church of the Good Shepherd – Protea is a daughter church of St. Saviour’s, which was formally established in 1854. Interestingly, St. Saviour’s played a significant role in the area, even building chapels to serve the expanding population. Of these chapels, only the Church of the Good Shepherd – Protea has endured, remaining linked to its mother church. The Church of the Good Shepherd – Protea and the surrounding land have witnessed a complex history. In the 1960s, Protea Village residents were forcibly removed, their homes destroyed. However, more recently, former residents and their descendants gained the right to return and rebuild in the area. Today, the Church of the Good Shepherd – Protea remains, a silent observer of this complicated story of displacement and return.
