Picture this a bustling community nestled in Fairfax County Virginia. This is Annandale a place where history whispers through the trees and the scent of Korean BBQ fills the air. Annandale’s story begins long before its official naming in 1830. In 1685 Englishman Col William H Fitzhugh acquired a vast 24000 acre estate transforming the wilderness into a major tobacco plantation. He called it Ravensworth. For over six generations the Fitzhugh family cultivated the land slowly selling portions over time. Annandale’s name however is a nod to the Scottish town of Annan at the mouth of the River Annan. A Scottish settler chose the name bringing a piece of his homeland to this burgeoning Virginia community.
The arrival of the Little River Turnpike in 1806 and the Columbia Pike in 1808 further shaped Annandale’s destiny. These roads connected it to Alexandria Fairfax and the District of Columbia fostering trade and growth. William Garges a shrewd businessman established the town’s first post office in 1837. His blacksmith shop and livery stable formed the heart of Annandale’s early commerce. Small farms and businesses sprouted around this central hub. The Annandale Methodist Chapel built in 1846 served as the community’s first church a testament to its growing religious life.
The American Civil War left its mark on Annandale. Union troops frequently occupied the town clashing occasionally with Confederate forces probing Washington DC’s defenses. The Methodist Chapel sadly fell into disrepair during the war eventually being dismantled by Union troops for construction materials. After the war dairy farming blossomed in Fairfax County. Small communities grew around railroad stations and dairy farms. Residents constructed stores churches and schools for their families.
Annandale’s 20th century saw remarkable transformation. By 1925 Fairfax County boasted more dairy farms than any other county in Virginia. The New Deal and World War II brought increased federal government work to the area. Post-war suburban growth transformed Annandale into a bedroom community with many residents commuting to Washington DC. Today this trend continues with Annandale residents commuting throughout Northern Virginia and the nation’s capital.
Annandale is more than just a suburb. It is also home to one of the area’s vibrant Koreatowns. Korean immigrants starting in the 1990s established a significant number of businesses and restaurants.
