Did a man named Mazilo truly shape Matzleinsdorf’s destiny? The year is 1136. A name, “Mazilinestorf,” surfaces in the Klosterneuburg Salbuch, whispering of a founder named Mazilo. This marks our first documented glimpse of Matzleinsdorf. Here we stand, at the heart of what was once a bustling village on the outskirts of Vienna, its story stretching back even further, perhaps to the 11th century. The whispers of a Roman road, traversing the Wienerberg, hint at Matzleinsdorf’s strategic importance. Centuries later, under Habsburg rule, Matzleinsdorf faced the wrath of Hungarian troops in 1477. Imagine the chaos as Matthias Corvinus’s forces swept through, leaving destruction in their wake. This Matzleinsdorf, now a suburb in Vienna’s fifth district of Margareten, bears echoes of its vibrant past. Let’s talk about the Laurenzergrund, its roots intertwined with Matzleinsdorf’s story. Picture a court belonging to the nuns of Maria-Magdalena, established here before finding refuge with the Laurenzerinnen after their own monastery was destroyed in the 1529 Turkish siege. This Matzleinsdorf court grew, evolving into the Laurenzergrund, a suburb in its own right. The 1683 Turkish siege brought more devastation. As Vienna rebuilt, a protective wall, the Matzleinsdorfer Linie, rose around the suburbs in 1704. Matzleinsdorf grew, and by 1727, it became part of Vienna’s expanding domain. In 1850, Matzleinsdorf, along with other suburbs, merged into Wieden, the fourth district. However, due to social and economic disparities, Margareten, Vienna’s fifth district, was carved out of Wieden in 1861, with Matzleinsdorf finding its new home within its boundaries. The Matzleinsdorfer Pfarrkirche, dedicated to St. Florian, stands as a testament to the area’s enduring spirit. Two previous churches graced this very spot. One, a Baroque masterpiece, fell victim to traffic concerns in 1965. The new church, a striking blend of steel and concrete, features an interplay of light and dark, with a prominent cross motif. Inside, seek out the main altar from the old church, depicting the transfiguration of St. Florian. Matzleinsdorf, a name etched in history, stands as a testament to its evolution from a small village to a vibrant suburb woven into Vienna’s rich tapestry.
