Consider the airwaves crackling to life. They carry voices and music across Poland. We are standing before Polskie Radio. It is a cornerstone of Polish culture and information.

Polskie Radio’s story began almost a century ago. The first trial broadcast took place on February 1 1925. It came from a Warsaw station. The Polish Radio Technical Society operated it. Roman Rudniewski spoke the first words. He said: “This is the trial radio broadcasting station of the Polish Radio Technical Society on the 385-metre wave band.”

This experiment led to the official establishment of Polskie Radio on August 18 1925. Regular programming started on April 18 1926. This marked the start of a rich legacy.

Before World War II, Polskie Radio had one national channel. It broadcast from a powerful longwave transmitter near Warsaw. There were also nine regional stations. These stations were in cities like Krakow, Poznan, and Katowice.

The invasion of Poland in 1939 destroyed the network. The final broadcast was a performance by Władysław Szpilman. He played Nocturne in C-sharp minor. Years later, he played the same piece for the station’s reopening.

After the war, Polskie Radio was rebuilt. The Soviet Red Army assisted. It valued radio as a propaganda medium. The station became part of the state broadcasting body.

In 1992, Polskie Radio became a politically independent corporation. It joined the European Broadcasting Union in 1993.

Today, Polskie Radio operates several national channels. Program 1 offers information and adult contemporary music. Program 2 features classical music and culture. Program 3 plays rock, alternative, and jazz music. Polskie Radio 24 provides news.

There are also channels for youth, children, and drivers. Polskie Radio also has 17 regional stations across Poland. They offer local programming.

Polskie Radio Trójka has compiled Polish music charts since 1982. These charts tracked musical popularity in Poland. Polskie Radio and Telewizja Polska jointly hold the “Dwa Teatry” Festival. It showcases television and radio plays. Awards recognize the best productions and performances.

However, Polskie Radio has faced controversy. In 2024, OFF Radio Krakow used A.I. to create an interview with a deceased Nobel laureate. This sparked outrage.

Despite challenges, Polskie Radio remains a vital institution. It informs, entertains, and connects people across Poland. As we stand here, we can almost hear the echoes of its broadcasts. They carry stories of the past and present. They shape the future of Polish culture.
