Here stands Kouzou-ji a temple with a story etched in time. Kouzou-ji is also known as Kōzō-ji. Its history is intertwined with faith and resilience. This temple is located in Tokyo.

The temple’s origins trace back to 1222. A priest named Haimi founded a hermitage. In 1224, Saint Shinran visited. Haimi converted and the temple became Kouzou-ji. It became a Jodo Shinshu temple.

During the Warring States period, Kouzou-ji faced destruction. It was consumed by fire during the Kok府台 battle. But in 1587, a priest named Joei Shonin of Zojo-ji Temple revived Kouzou-ji. The temple persevered as a Jodo sect temple.

Kouzou-ji was supported by the Mito Tokugawa family. This support reflects its significance. The temple is located along the old Mito Road. The Tokugawa family crest can still be seen here.

According to historical records, Kouzou-ji suffered multiple fires. These fires occurred in 1592, 1822 and 1883. Each time Kouzou-ji was rebuilt. Much of its treasures and records were lost to flames.

The main statue at Kouzou-ji is a three-piece Amida Nyorai. This statue reflects the temple’s core faith. A portrait of Shinran is also displayed. This highlights the temple’s spiritual lineage.

Within Kouzou-ji grounds, you can find the grave of Matsuchi Suziki. He was a comedian from Katsushika during the Edo period. His grave is designated as a cultural asset of the ward.

Today’s main hall dates back to 1974. It was rebuilt to replace previous structures. Kouzou-ji continues to serve as a place of worship.

Kouzou-ji also houses cultural properties. These include a Boat-shaped Jizo statue. It also includes the grave of Matsuchi Suziki. These treasures tell the story of Kouzou-ji.

The temple’s mountain name is Kakushouzan. Its院 name is Rengeikein. Kouzou-ji stands as a testament to faith and renewal. It has survived fires and wars. It is still a vital part of the community. This temple shows the enduring spirit of Tokyo.
