Tucked away on a hilltop overlooking Toyama Bay, Shoko-ji Temple stands as a testament to time. It’s an easy walk from JR Fushiki Station, but the journey uphill is worth it. Shoko-ji Temple initially appears fortress-like. High walls, a corner watchtower, and even a moat add to this impression. Shoko-ji Temple’s history is intertwined with the Jodo Shinshu sect of Buddhism. It served as a vital destination for pilgrims from northern Honshu during the Edo Period. Traveling to the main temple in Kyoto was often impossible for them. This explains the temple’s defensive architecture. It needed to protect itself.

Shoko-ji Temple flourished as a pilgrimage site. However, with the decline of Buddhism in the late 19th century, the temple faced hard times. Pilgrims became fewer. The temple fell into disrepair. Today, Shoko-ji Temple stands revitalized, thanks to a 23-year restoration project. This meticulous work, completed just a few years ago, returned the temple to its former glory. The complex now boasts twelve structures, each designated as an “Important Cultural Property”. The main worship hall of Shoko-ji Temple is a sight to behold. Built in 1795 and modeled after the Amida Hall of Kyoto’s Nishi Honganji, its grandeur is breathtaking. The opulence inspires quiet contemplation.

Adjacent to the main hall are a series of buildings. These served various purposes for the monks, pilgrims, and visitors. The kitchen, with its indoor water source, once bustled with activity. Imagine the energy of mealtimes centuries ago, as dozens of pilgrims were fed. The temple also houses artistic treasures, including two large folding screens. Covered in gold leaf and depicting ancient Kyoto, they offer a glimpse into the past. Shoko-ji Temple has large, unadorned rooms, possibly used for meetings or pilgrim lodging. Long hallways open onto serene interior gardens. Some feature Zen rock formations. In contrast, other rooms are ornately decorated. Carved wooden transoms, colorful sliding panels, and hanging scrolls adorn these spaces. These were reserved for dignitaries. One room even has a screened, raised area. This was likely where a local lord sat while addressing petitions.

Shoko-ji Temple holds seven “mysteries”. A fruitless gingko tree, a stone from the sky, a pond that never dries, a monkey holding up the roof, a pillar warding off evil, a flying dragon inkstone, and a three-needle pine. How many can you find? Shoko-ji Temple offers a rich experience. Whether you’re interested in architecture, Buddhist temples, or simply seeking a unique destination, Shoko-ji Temple is a must-see.
