Myokosan Honjoji Temple stands proudly in Shishibone. It’s a Nichirenshu temple with a rich history. The temple’s wooden gate is fresh and new, contrasting with the weathered stone sculptures within. A bell tower reaches towards the sky. Inside the main hall, you can find the temple’s principle image: a statue of Sanpo Soshi, the Founder Nichiren. The temple bell, cast in 1777, adds to the atmosphere. Shishibone’s history is intertwined with Myokosan Honjoji Temple. A stone tablet, resting on the bell tower’s base, tells of the temple’s reconstruction after the devastating 1923 earthquake. This isn’t just a temple, it’s a keeper of Shishibone’s memories. Just outside the main gate, a stone Koshinto tower stands as a guidepost to Edo. It’s registered as a cultural asset by Edogawaku. The tower’s carvings depict a Shomen Kongo and three monkeys. Inscriptions on its base reveal directions to Edo and other destinations. They even mark the date of its creation: 1814. This reveals Shishibone’s past as a crossroads from Shimousa province to Edo. Myokosan Honjoji Temple has endured Edo Bakufu suppression and natural disasters. Its main hall, rebuilt in 1929, now houses the Jukkai Mandula. Shishibone itself has a fascinating etymology, meaning “deer bone.” Legend says a sacred deer, carrying the deity Takemikazuchi no Mikoto, died on its journey from Kashima to Nara. It was buried in Shishibone, giving the district its name. While the deer’s burial mound is gone, a memorial remains. The temple offers a quiet place to reflect on the past. It’s a testament to Shishibone’s resilience and a window into its rich history.
