Gazing at this unassuming plaque on via Bellosguardo, it’s hard to imagine the horrors that once unfolded here at Villa Triste. Villa Triste wasn’t a villa of leisure. It was a house of sorrow, a place of torture and death during World War II. The original villa belonged to the Arnstein family, a wealthy Jewish family who fled to America before their home became infamous. The Fascist government confiscated Villa Arnstein in 1940. From 1942 to 1945, it housed the Special Inspectorate for Public Security. This was the first such office in Italy, a chilling precursor to many more. The mere mention of via Bellosguardo sent shivers down people’s spines. Villa Triste became synonymous with brutality. A special fascist militia, composed of police, carabinieri, financial police, and army, operated within its walls. The inspectorate, led by Giuseppe Gueli, became the headquarters of the Collotti Gang. This ruthless group, led by 22-year-old Gaetano Collotti, terrorized Trieste. They targeted Slovenian anti-fascists and partisans initially. After the Nazi takeover in 1943, they actively participated in the arrest and deportation of Trieste’s Jewish community. The Villa Triste plaque stands as a stark reminder of this dark chapter. Inside Villa Triste, unimaginable cruelties were inflicted. Torture methods ranged from beatings and burnings to electrocution and simulated drowning. The cries of the victims were deliberately masked by loud military marches played day and night. Despite this, the screams could be heard for blocks. Most residents knew about the horrors occurring within Villa Triste. However, fear and suspicion kept them silent. After Trieste’s liberation, Villa Triste was demolished, almost as if the city wanted to erase this shameful chapter. Gaetano Collotti, attempting to escape justice, was intercepted and executed by partisans. Some members of his gang were imprisoned, but later released. The Villa Triste plaque is a small, easily overlooked memorial. It’s a testament to the atrocities committed and a reminder of a past that should never be forgotten. This plaque stands where Villa Triste once stood, a symbol of the suffering endured within those walls.
