Nestled in the lively Sumida area of Tokyo, a mere 10-minute stroll from Kinshicho Station, the Honjo Fire Station houses the Honjo Disaster Prevention Centre. Here, you’ll discover a unique blend of education and entertainment, preparing you for nature’s unpredictable events. Honjo Disaster Prevention Centre isn’t your average disaster drill. It’s a fun, interactive learning experience disguised as a theme park. Ever wondered how it feels to experience an earthquake? At the Honjo Disaster Prevention Centre, you can safely experience simulated tremors, mimicking the chaos of a real quake. From earthquake newbies to seasoned shakers, this experience equips you with practical skills for when the ground gets grumbly. Fancy battling a blaze? Head to the Firefighting Experience Corner. Grab a fire extinguisher, learn how to use an indoor hydrant, and tackle simulated flames. Kids from third grade and up, and adults, can put their firefighting skills to the test. Just remember, don’t wear your Sunday best unless you’re aiming for the “firefighter chic” look! Smoke, a major hazard during fires, takes center stage in the Smoke Experience Corner. Learn its characteristics and practice escaping through a “neutral zone”. This boundary between thick smoke and breathable air is a vital survival tactic. Prepare for torrential downpours and floods in the Flooding Experience Corner. Using virtual reality, experience navigating flooded streets during a storm, a humbling challenge for anyone who thinks dodging puddles is enough. Learn to evacuate early before being swept away, and experience the struggle of opening a car door underwater. The VR Disaster Experience Corner offers a futuristic way to face earthquakes, fires, and windstorms. This immersive technology lets you react in real-time, practicing valuable survival strategies in scenarios that seem out of this world. Ever wondered how first responders perform rescues after a disaster? The Rescue Corner lets you experience rescue operations, preparing you to help others. Practice using tools to clear rubble or learning first aid, acquiring hands-on life-saving skills. Best of all, these experiences at the Honjo Disaster Prevention Centre are free! However, reservations are essential. Book online or by phone up to five days in advance for various courses. Arrive 15 minutes early. Remember, this isn’t a fashionably late affair! The center is open from 9 am to 5 pm, closed on Wednesdays and the third Thursday of every month (unless it’s a national holiday). Activities end at 4:30 pm.
