In the heart of North York, a beacon of Jewish life has shone for over a century. This is the story of the Stashover-Slipia Congregation. The Stashover-Slipia Congregation isn’t just a building. It’s a testament to the resilience and spirit of two communities. The year was 1905. A group of Jewish immigrants from Staszow, Poland, arrived in Toronto. They sought solace and community in a new land. They established the Anshei Stashov congregation. Just a few years later, in 1908, another group, hailing from Slipi, Poland, formed the Chevra Knesseth Israel Anshei Slipia. These two congregations, born from similar struggles and hopes, eventually merged to become the Stashover-Slipia Congregation we know today. Imagine Toronto in the early 1900s. A bustling city, yet a challenging place for newcomers. These immigrants, unable to speak English, found comfort in their shared language and traditions. Their synagogues became more than just places of worship. They were havens. They offered a piece of home, where Yiddish was spoken, letters from loved ones were shared, and dreams for a better future were nurtured. By 1910, each group had established their own synagogues, often meeting in temporary locations. As they grew, they purchased houses and transformed them into their spiritual homes. The Stashover congregation found its home on Dundas Street near Spadina. The Slipia congregation settled on Oxford Street. The spirit of these communities endured, even through the hardships of the Depression. However, the shadow of the Holocaust loomed large, leaving both Staszow and Slipi devoid of Jewish life. The survivors who made their way to Toronto found solace in the Stashover-Slipia Congregation. As the Jewish community began to move north, the Stashover congregation relocated to Sultana Avenue. They were soon joined by the Slipia congregation, solidifying their bond. The Stashover-Slipia Congregation thrived in its new home, becoming a vital part of Toronto’s Jewish life. The congregation’s best-known rabbi was Rabbi Yehuda Leib Graubart. He was a respected scholar who arrived in Toronto shortly after World War I. He authored books on Jewish law, established a yeshiva, and became principal of the Eitz Chaim School. After his passing in the 1940s, the congregation remained lay-led. Through the decades, the Stashover-Slipia Congregation has faced its share of challenges. Dwindling numbers and an aging population threatened its future. But with each challenge, the congregation found new ways to thrive. Today, the Stashover-Slipia Congregation continues to hold services and foster a warm, welcoming community. It stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of two small Polish towns, forever woven into the fabric of Toronto.
