In 1681, a momentous shift occurred in Strasbourg’s history. The city, previously part of the Holy Roman Empire, became French. This transition was overseen by none other than King Louis XIV, and it ushered in a new era of fortification for the Place fortifiée de Strasbourg. The Place fortifiée de Strasbourg’s medieval walls, originally designed by Daniel Specklin, were deemed insufficient for the city’s new status. Enter Sébastien Le Prestre de Vauban, the foremost military engineer of his time. Vauban arrived in Strasbourg just three days after the city’s capitulation. He immediately began to reimagine the city’s defenses. He devised a plan for a formidable pentagonal citadel, complete with five bastions, ravelins, and hornworks. This citadel would serve as the centerpiece of the Place fortifiée de Strasbourg. Vauban didn’t stop with the citadel. He also enhanced the existing city walls, adding more hornworks and counterguards. He incorporated a system of bridge-locks and flood defenses, utilizing the Ill River to protect the city. One particularly ingenious creation was the Barrage Vauban. This structure served as both a bridge and a dam, regulating water flow into the moats and enabling the flooding of the fortress’s south side during a siege. The Place fortifiée de Strasbourg also saw the construction of barracks and military hospitals within the city walls. External fortifications were built on the Rhine islands, including the Fort de Kehl. Vauban’s vision extended beyond the immediate city. He was instrumental in fortifying the entire region of Alsace, making Strasbourg a crucial stronghold. The Place fortifiée de Strasbourg’s fortifications evolved throughout the 18th and 19th centuries. Louis de Cormontaigne made some alterations to Vauban’s citadel, and later German authorities further adapted the defenses. Sadly, much of the original Place fortifiée de Strasbourg was demolished after the Franco-Prussian War. However, remnants of Vauban’s work, including a front of the citadel, can still be seen today, nestled within a city park. Two plan-reliefs, one from 1725 and another from 1836, offer the best visual representations of the fortifications in their prime. These models provide a glimpse into the scale and complexity of Vauban’s design and give us a greater understanding of the Place fortifiée de Strasbourg.
