In 1887 Phillips and Co a syndicate named the area Hoxton Park. This was an important step in West Hoxton’s history. West Hoxton itself is an extension of Hoxton Park. It’s a suburb located 40 kilometres west of Sydney’s central business district. It’s part of the City of Liverpool in the Greater Western Sydney region.
West Hoxton wasn’t always the bustling place it is today. Initially it was farmland. Thomas Setrop Amos a London solicitor received 800 acres there in 1818. This land formed the basis of what would eventually become West Hoxton.
The real growth happened much later. West Hoxton primarily developed during the late 1990s. It became a residential area. The population exploded. It increased more than sixfold from 1996 to 2001 reaching almost 5000 people. By 2016 it had doubled again.
This growth brought a diverse population. Many people came from overseas. In 2021 the census showed a multicultural mix. Australian Italian English Indian and Chinese ancestries were common. A significant number of residents came from Iraq Fiji the Philippines Vietnam and New Zealand. Arabic Hindi Spanish and Vietnamese were spoken at home alongside English. This vibrant mix makes West Hoxton a truly unique suburb.
West Hoxton boasts several schools including Hoxton Park Public School Greenway Park Public School Thomas Hassall Anglican College and Clancy Catholic College. These institutions serve the growing community. They educate the children of West Hoxton’s diverse population.
The suburb’s transport links are essential. West Hoxton sits west of Cowpastures Road. This road connects the area to Liverpool and Camden. Transit Systems operates four bus routes 851 852 853 and 854. These buses run along Cowpastures Road linking West Hoxton to Liverpool.
