“Conception and safe childbirth?” That’s the main reason people visit Suishingu. Suishingu in Tokyo is a Shinto shrine with a fascinating history. It is dedicated to the deity Amenominakanushi. The shrine’s story begins in Kurume Fukuoka.

In 1818, the ninth daimyō of the Kurume Domain established a branch shrine in Edo. This was within the domain’s mansion in Mita. The shrine opened to the public on the fifth of each month. People soon flocked to Suishingu for blessings.

Later in 1871, the Arima family relocated. They moved the shrine from Mita to Akasaka. A year later, Suishingu found its permanent home. It was moved to its current location. This site was once one of the family’s mansions.

“Suiten” is the Japanese name for Varuna. Varuna is a Hindu deity. This deity came to Japan with Buddhism. When the Japanese Empire separated Shinto and Buddhist temples, Suiten became associated with Amenominakanushi.

Today, Suishingu stands as a testament to faith. It is a place for expectant parents. It is a place for those seeking blessings for safe delivery. Suitengūmae Station is nearby. It is named after this very shrine. There are about twenty-five other shrines with the same name throughout Japan. But this Suishingu holds a special place in the hearts of Tokyo residents. It offers solace and hope. The shrine is more than just a historical site. It is a living, breathing part of the community. It continues to provide comfort and spiritual guidance to all who visit. Remember the story of Suishingu. It journeyed from Kurume to find its home here in Tokyo.
