Around 7,000 years ago, the earliest known settlers arrived in the area around Mirs Bay, not far from where Tong Pai Tau juts into the sea. Could Tong Pai Tau, with its commanding view of the sea, have served as a lookout point during these turbulent times? As centuries passed, life along the coast evolved. Shenzhen’s maritime industry flourished, with oyster farming, salt production, and pearl harvesting becoming important livelihoods. The Song dynasty marked a peak in salt production, with large salt farms like the Diefu Salt Farm producing impressive quantities. Perhaps the people of Tong Pai Tau played a role in this industry, harvesting the salt from the nearby waters. The Hakka people, known for their unique architecture and communal living, also have a long history in the Shenzhen area. Their castle-like compounds, blending defensive and residential functions, can still be seen today. While we don’t know if Hakka settlements ever existed at Tong Pai Tau, it is intriguing to consider the possibility.
