How did a mountain get its name? Mount Banks stands tall a testament to exploration and history. Located in the Blue Mountains National Park about 100 kilometres west of Sydney it’s a prominent peak in the Explorers Range. It’s not just any mountain. Mount Banks holds a special place in Australian history. It was named in 1804 by the explorer George Caley. Caley worked for the botanist Sir Joseph Banks. Caley was the first European to reach the summit of Mount Banks originally known as Mount King George. This makes Mount Banks a significant landmark.

The ascent of Mount Banks offers a unique experience. The lower slopes reveal the typical Triassic sandstone of the Blue Mountains region. The terrain is rugged with sparse scrub. The upper part of the mountain is different. A basalt cap dramatically alters the landscape. Lush vegetation including grass and a canopy of trees thrives there. Hikers can easily access Mount Banks via the Bells Line of Road. A walking track leads to the summit. There is even a trigonometric station at the top 1062 metres above sea level. Sadly there are no views from the summit itself. You have to move to the escarpment to see the Grose Valley.

Mount Banks isn’t just for the adventurous. It’s a popular spot for bushwalking. Extensive views of the Grose Valley can be enjoyed from the lower slopes and fire trails. Photography enthusiasts appreciate the stunning vistas. But remember there is no camping allowed on this protected World Heritage site.

This mountain is more than a scenic viewpoint. It’s a place where history and nature intertwine. It’s a journey back in time. It’s a window into the past. Remember George Caley. Remember Sir Joseph Banks. Remember Mount Banks. This remarkable peak offers a blend of adventure and historical significance. So take the journey yourself. Enjoy Mount Banks.
