“Did you ever hear the whispers of the Atlantic Forest?” I ask, gesturing towards Parque Vila dos Remédios. “Here, amidst the urban sprawl of São Paulo, lies a hidden gem, a verdant sanctuary teeming with life.” Parque Vila dos Remédios, a sprawling 110,000 square meters, isn’t just a park. It’s a time capsule, a vibrant remnant of the Atlantic Forest. Inaugurated in June 1979, Parque Vila dos Remédios has a rich history. The land was originally owned by the Franciscan Congregation of Divine Providence, often referred to as the “Bosque das Freiras” (Nuns’ Woods). In 1976, the land was entrusted to the city, becoming a haven for both nature and city dwellers. The park is divided into four distinct bosques, each with its own unique charm. The “Bosque das Trilhas” boasts four trails: the Owl Trail, the Juruviara Trail, the Woodpecker Trail, and the Pitiguari Trail. Here, amidst the dense foliage, keen observers can spot the vibrant plumage of the suiriri, juruviara, and tesourinha birds, migratory visitors who grace the park with their presence between September and March. In the “Bosque da Nascente” (Spring Woods), a natural spring feeds three tranquil lakes: the Spring Lake, the Heron Lake, and the Swan Lake. These interconnected waterways create a thriving ecosystem, teeming with aquatic life and providing a vital source of water for the park’s diverse inhabitants. The “Bosque da Igrejinha” (Little Church Woods) offers a peaceful retreat with its solitary trail, perfect for quiet contemplation. Finally, the “Bosque do Córrego” (Stream Woods) features a meandering stream that connects the Heron and Swan Lakes, adding to the park’s serene ambiance. Parque Vila dos Remédios is more than just a green space; it’s a testament to the resilience of nature. It’s a place where endangered species like the cedar, jussara palm, Brazilian wood, and Paraná pine thrive, protected from the encroaching city. It’s a place where the whispers of the Atlantic Forest can still be heard.
