Fancy a burst of color in the heart of Stockholm? Right here is Tantolunden park. It is not just a green space. It is a vibrant tapestry of history, community, and recreation.
Tantolunden sits in Södermalm. It is nestled between the railway, Ringvägen, Drakenberg, and Lake Årstaviken. This central location makes it one of Stockholm’s largest parks.
Let us step back in time. In 1885, Stockholm’s first city gardener Alfred Medin began designing Tantolunden. Construction continued until 1899. Medin envisioned a romantic landscape. He created winding paths leading to the park’s highest point. This circular design encouraged imagination under the green trees.
Did you know that Tantolunden was built on an old garbage dump? The city expanded and restored it. They covered it with soil. However, the soil dried out quickly in summer. Switching to better soil helped solve this problem. In 1906, a playground was added to the western part of the park.
Tantolunden also boasts a rich cultural history. An open-air theatre thrived on the slope to Årstaviken. It was home to performances until 1961. In the park’s center, there was once a dance floor. Today, a music pavilion stands in the eastern part. The environmental and cultural association “People of Tanto” donated it to the city in 1988. It briefly became the Narvapaviljongen in 2009.
Look to the southwest slope. You will see colonial cottages built in the 1920s. These are now called Northern Tantolunden, Southern Tantolunden, and Little Tanto. During World War I, Stockholm encouraged residents to grow food here. The southern slope promised good growing conditions. The steep terrain required retaining walls and terraces.
In 1997, Skansen acquired two colonial gardens from Sodra Tantolunden. These gardens represent the 1920s and 1940s. The Tantolunden Colonial Gardens Association donated them.
During the emergency years of 1939-1945, an air defense position stood near Tantolunden. It protected the Årstabron and Liljeholmsbron bridges.
Today, Tantolunden is known for its colorful allotments. More than a hundred tiny wooden cottages dot the hillside. These plots feature manicured flower beds. They also have terracotta-red miniature homes.
Take a walk through Tantolunden. You can enjoy mini golf. You can find outdoor gyms. Or, you can simply relax on a bench. Watch boats pass by in the summer. In winter, Tantolunden is perfect for a stroll or toboggan ride.
